Not Eating

Hi all – As discussed yesterday, Sally needed to eat well in order to get discharged. Unfortunately, that didn’t pan out. Sally normally eats 20+ oz of milk when she’s healthy, today she only had about 9, of that 5.5 before 9am. She refused the bottle all afternoon, as a result there is no way we could keep Sally hydrated at home. She was also making gagging and horsey coughing noises while drinking and to top it off, had diarrhea this morning. The floor doctors didn’t have an answer for all of this, at least ones that didn’t sound right, so I asked to see one of our Leukemia doctors, especially before the long weekend.

Dr. Tom came by and said that the Leukemia Team believes Sally has a virus in her gut. Although her numbers are rebounding, they haven’t been strong long enough to heal it. He thinks it’ll take another 24-48 hours for her body to fight the infection and we’ll hopefully see her appetite return. Sounds plausible to me, THAT is why we go straight to our Leukemia doctors for answers now. Nicole arrived around 9pm and as she did, Sally threw up some, her first time during this whole process. 20 minutes earlier she had started making gagging noises and asked her nurse to bring some anti-nausea meds, but we were too late. We’re going to switch back to IV drugs for the next day until her tummy is feeling better. This means Sally is likely in for another two days at least. We’re hoping we can at least come home on Monday for Thomas’ birthday, I know he wants us all together for that.

The rest of the day was pretty uneventful, Sally finally got out of isolation. The good news is we got to do our laps of the hallway, which made Sally happy. A senior volunteer told me this evening that 14 laps equals a mile, I easily do two of those on Fridays and Saturdays. The bad news is we have to move back into a double room, and didn’t get one of the bigger rooms this time, so sharing a smaller room with a cute little girl with a large family. Before moving my buddy Scott (one of the other yellow tutu wearers from my triathlon club) came by for a long visit which was great, it would have been difficult in the new space. He was also heading to see one of our friends who got diagnosed with cancer at the same time as Sally, its sadly a small world sometimes.

Off to bed, have to head in and relieve Nicole at 6:30am so she can get to work. Please keep Sally in your thoughts and prayers.

Matt
